Money Smart Week is just around the corner, October 20 – October 25. The Financial Stability Alliance and partner organizations have several events and workshops lined up throughout the week. Join us in this national campaign that helps consumers better manage their personal finances. Smart Foodies (10/20)
Love good food, but not the price tag? You can eat better on your tight budget if you add a little ambition to your nutrition. See how smart shopping, planning, and cooking save time and money, and taste the results yourself as professional chefs show us how it’s done. Families welcome. Elder Justice (10/21)
Every year 1 in 10 older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, exploitation or scamming. And that’s only part of the picture: Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23.5 cases go unreported. This event is an open discussion of how to provide vulnerable elders in our community the protection and justice they deserve. From Coverage To Care: Understanding Your Health Coverage (10/21)
Our first Money Smart Week event in Owen County! Individual Solutions at IU Health will give an overview of the new health care law and federal marketplace, as well as review what plans are out there and how to best choose them and use them! You can also find out where and how to receive help in Owen County. This workshop will include the work that Individual Solutions does making referrals and directing consumers for assistance in Owen County; an overview of the marketplace insurance program, including changes to insurance because of the ACA; insurance terminology; overview of plan structures and offerings; and how to connect to primary care. How To Be a Credit Master (10/21)
This presentation is intended to reach an audience of young adults interested in learning more about credit and how crucial it can be to making smart financial decisions. Indiana University’s MoneySmarts Team will discuss topics including: establishing and checking credit, attaining credit cards, and the pitfalls students may encounter in the process of building a money-smart future. From Coverage To Care: Understanding Your Health Coverage (10/23)
Representatives from Indiana Solutions-IU Health, City of Bloomington, Premier Healthcare and CoverMonroe will provide information for consumers and providers on understanding insurance terminology, comparing insurance plans, choosing a primary care physician, and community events to learn more about coverage. Career Pathway Fair (10/23)
Attendees of this event will meet faculty and staff of Hoosier Hills Career Center, observe students working in lab and classroom settings, talk with college, military and career representatives, and attend financial aid and career pathway informational settings. Paying for College (10/23)
Students, parents, and community members- join us at Ivy Tech to learn more about how to pay for your college experience! ISM College Planning will provide information on saving for college and how to look for scholarships. Our local 21st Century Scholars liaison will talk about their program and state financial aid. The Director of Guidance from Bloomington High School North will talk about school Financial Aid workshops. There will be a Q&A after the presentations. Pie Fest (10/25)
Pie makers, start your ovens. In partnership with Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, the Bloomington Food Policy Council is hosting a pie extravaganza titled “Pie Fest” for the 2014 Annual National Food Day celebration. The free afternoon event includes pie baking demonstrations, fruit tree care presentations, and a pie-in-the-sky community food summit to identify problems and brainstorm solutions critical to our local food system. The summit is a potluck, and all participants are encouraged to bring their favorite sweet or savory pie to share. Hot apple cider will be provided. Free parking is available.
